Health officers in seven Bay Area counties Monday toughened their recommendation into an order that everyone wear masks indoors again in order to tamp down sharply rising infections driven by the highly contagious delta variant of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Health officers in Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Sonoma counties and the city of Berkeley joined in announcing the new local health orders for indoor use of face coverings.
