A day of “extreme behavior” by the Dixie Fire vaulted it from No. 11 to No. 8 on the list of the biggest California wildfires in modern records.

The Wednesday morning report by Forest Service fire managers put it at 274,139 acres (428 square miles) with 35% containment. That was about 20,000 acres more than 24 hours previous.
