A fast-moving wildfire that started Wednesday afternoon had within hours prompted evacuations in Placer and Nevada counties.

As of Friday morning, the River Fire had burned 2,600 acres (4 square miles) and was 30% contained, the California Department of Fire and Forestry Protection said. Eighty-eight structures were confirmed destroyed.
