National Forest officials in eastern California announced Sunday that they were closing a 26-mile stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail as a lightning-sparked wildfire rapidly exploded nearby and critically dangerous wildfire weather and erratic winds threatened to make the situation worse.

The Tamarack Fire, which began on July 4 in Alpine County, grew from 500 acres Friday night to 18,299 as of Sunday morning, with zero containment. U.S. Forest officials originally estimated that the fire had expanded to 21,000 acres but later decreased that estimate at 11 a.m. Sunday based on more refined mapping tools.
