The anticipated hottest day of the Bay Area’s heat wave arrived Saturday with a dramatic range of temperatures across the region, paving the way for a scorching day for inland residents that will somewhat spare coastal communities.

Much of the East and North Bay had already reported temperatures edging into the 80s early Saturday after barely cooling down overnight, according to the National Weather Service. But to the west, the marine layer — which has been protecting the Bay from the worst effects of the high-pressure weather system over southern Nevada — has held on longer than anticipated.
