The Food and Drug Administration expanded authorization Monday for adolescents as young as age 12 to receive a booster shot of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine just as kids are returning from winter break amid sharply rising cases across the country driven by the highly contagious omicron variant.
The FDA also shortened period for booster eligibility for Pfizer’s shot to at least five months since the initial two-dose vaccine, down from six months. The FDA also allowed for certain immunocompromised children 5 through 11 years of age to receive a third primary series dose.
