New data published today by California’s health department shows COVID case rates in the Bay Area and California overall now have rocketed past this summer’s delta peak.

As of Monday, only a few counties had reached the new omicron-fueled milestone, but with data from the Christmas holiday weekend pouring in to the California Department of Public Health, Tuesday’s data update propelled case rates above the peak in early August, 2021, for the whole state. That makes the current outbreak the state’s second worst, surpassed only by the pre-vaccination spike last winter.
