WALNUT CREEK — “Everything must go” reads the sign hanging in the window of the Papyrus store in Broadway Plaza.

In the latest sign of retail industry woes, the parent company of the card, stationery and paper gifts chain is closing more than 250 stores in the U.S. and laying off hundreds of employees. The retailer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
