HAYWARD — BART police are stepping up their presence on the system’s trains following a deadly stabbing inside one of its cars Tuesday afternoon, as officials seek to reassure riders anxious about their safety in the wake of the killing.
The victim of the fatal confrontation was identified Wednesday as 49-year-old Oliver Williams, an Oakland man who intervened to stop the suspected killer from stealing another passenger’s shoes, only to wind up stabbed to death with his own knife at the South Hayward station.
