As prosecutors probe her office, Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith’s failures in the handling of concealed-weapon permit applications provides another example of why she should have retired rather than seek re-election in 2018. County residents deserve better.

It remains to be seen whether the District Attorney’s Office investigation of possible political favoritism in issuing of the permits leads to charges. But Smith’s inability to even provide records to this news organization about the applications she has received in recent years suggests either corruption or incompetence.
