As Ring faces questions from lawmakers, with one U.S. senator slamming the Amazon-owned doorbell maker over “lax” privacy rules and civil rights protections, we asked several Bay Area police departments to share their policies for their partnerships with Ring — and found that many have no written policy.
Eight Bay Area police departments are among the 677 around the nation that have a partnership with Ring and its Neighbors app, according to the company’s online map. The program allows law enforcement to ask Ring users for their video footage when police need help with investigations. The company and police tout their teaming up as a way to protect neighborhoods.
