Apple said Wednesday it has broken ground on what will be a 3-million square-foot campus in Austin, Texas that the company said is a key part of its commitment to contribute $350 billion to the U.S. economy by 2023.
Apple’s announcement came ahead of a planned visit on Wednesday by President Donald Trump to Apple’s current Austin plant, which covers 244,000 square feet and employs 500 people. Apple said it will initially have 5,000 people at its new campus, and expects to expand that number to 15,000 employees by 2022. The company currently has about 7,000 people working in the Austin area.
