Facebook has agreed to pay $40 million in a settlement with advertisers, after inflating — allegedly by up to 900 percent — the time it said users spent watching videos, according to court records.
The Menlo Park social-media behemoth was sued by advertisers in 2016 over a set of new user metrics issued in 2014. Of particular interest to companies advertising on the firm’s platform was a “duration metric” that according to the plaintiffs in the suit “purported to measure the average length of time consumers spent viewing the advertiser’s posted video advertisement and displayed that information to the advertisers.”
