A bill that could wreak havoc on the business models of Uber, Lyft and other companies that rely on gig workers is closer to becoming law after the California Senate passed it 29-11 along party lines Tuesday, and the state Assembly approved it by a 56-15 vote Wednesday. If signed into law, AB 5 would force firms using independent contractors to classify more of them as employees. Uber on Wednesday said it would not reclassify its drivers as employees if the bill becomes law.

The bill now goes to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk. He is expected to sign the bill — which the San Francisco ride-hailing giants and other companies have been furiously battling against — into law after indicating his support for it in a Labor Day op-ed.
