A bill that could wreak havoc on the business models of Uber, Lyft and other companies that rely on gig workers is closer to becoming law after the California Senate passed it 29-11 along party lines Tuesday night.
AB 5 now goes back to the majority Democratic State Assembly, which must approve amendments to the bill with a final vote before sending it to the governor’s desk. Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to sign AB 5 — which the San Francisco ride-hailing giants and other companies have been furiously lobbying against — into law after indicating his support for it in a Labor Day op-ed.
