PALO ALTO — Authorities have booked 29-year-old Palo Alto resident Adam Allen Smith into jail following a 29-hour standoff with police that began Friday morning, after police received a report that Smith tried to strangle his girlfriend.

The Palo Alto Police Department received a call Friday morning around 9:18 a.m. from a woman inside a home on Tennessee Lane. The caller said Smith tried to strangle his girlfriend, a woman in her twenties, earlier in the day. The two women locked themselves in a bedroom away from Smith, who reportedly had a handgun.
