PG&E’s equipment caused the most deadly and destructive fire in California history, a lethal blaze that roared through Butte County last fall and killed 85 people, according to a new report released Wednesday by state fire investigators that intensifies the woes that loom over the disgraced utility.

The decision by the state’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, came amid a bankruptcy proceeding initiated by PG&E to help the embattled power provider ward off a forbidding array of debts and wildfire-related liabilities.
