Citing repeated failures to meet key milestones and poor project management, federal officials on Thursday rescinded nearly $1 billion in money for California’s bullet train, a move that puts the beleaguered project on even shakier ground.

Governor Gavin Newsom quickly shot back, calling the move “illegal” and “a direct assault on California.”
