While Musk eventually dropped his idea to take Tesla private, his little missive led to the Securities and Exchange Comission suing him for fraud and seeking to remove him as Tesla’s chief executive. Musk quickly settled with the SEC in a deal that included him, and Tesla, each paying $20 million fines to the regulatory group.
