After questioning Facebook and Google on Tuesday about what they’re doing about a rise of hate crimes and white nationalism that the platforms have helped enable, some lawmakers made it clear: They want the tech giants to do more.

The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing titled “Hate Crimes and the Rise of White Nationalism,” putting the tech companies on the spot less than a month after an attack on two New Zealand mosques left 50 people dead and dozens more injured. The shooter live-streamed the attack on Facebook and the video spread to YouTube and other platforms. The suspect in the shootings is a 28-year-old Australian man who authorities say wrote a manifesto in which he complains about Muslims, immigrants and wanting to save the white race.
