SANTA CRUZ — If you’ve been keeping up with Bay Area news recently, you may have seen that Jordan Peele’s new horror film “Us” is not just scaring up records at the box office, it’s supposedly scaring people off from visiting Santa Cruz altogether.

“People are scared of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk after seeing Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’,” proclaimed a headline in SF Gate. “Fearful moviegoers say ‘Us’ will keep them away from Santa Cruz,” ABC7 News announced. Similar headlines could be found in outlets as far flung as the Miami Herald and Atlanta Journal Constitution, each citing a number of social media posts as evidence that ranged from obvious quips to seemingly genuine reactions.
