East Bay Rep. Eric Swalwell jumped into the crowded presidential race Monday, painting himself as a generational change from the Democratic Party’s old guard and outlining a White House bid aimed at appealing to young voters on issues from gun control to student debt reform.

But the fourth-term congressman starts the race as an underdog in a field of better-known candidates who have been campaigning for months — and his first challenge will be getting voters to pick him out of a lineup long enough to field two teams in a typical March Madness game.
