Records may fall, power to homes and businesses may be compromised, and the air around the Bay Area figures to remain gray and dirty as the unofficial end of summer arrives this weekend with a brief blast of heat that may topple records.

“The long-story short is that there will be an oppressive heat wave,” National Weather Service meteorologist Drew Peterson said Thursday morning. “However, it won’t be as long as the last one.”
