As many Bay Area residents awoke Wednesday to a respite from the poor air quality brought by a trio of historic wildfires, they can thank the firefighters who have largely corralled those flames.
The three blazes had combined to burn 800,000 acres — more than twice the size of Los Angeles, or about 25 San Franciscos — and had damaged or destroyed nearly 2,000 structures while forcing tens of thousands to flee. Crews have recovered seven bodies, including a 63-year-old Felton woman Tuesday night who they said died of natural causes, and more people have been reported missing. Two of the complexes rank already rank among the top three largest wildfires in California’s history.
