Just as schools prepare for a new academic year amid a simmering debate over whether it’s safe for kids to return to classrooms comes worrisome news that infections among children are growing rapidly.

A summary of publicly reported state data on children and COVID-19 by the American Academy of Pediatrics and Children’s Hospital Association found cumulative child cases reported nationally grew by 97,078 from July 16 to July 30, a 40% increase over that time. Much of that surge was in states in the South and West.
