There was another significant spike in cases, hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 in California on Tuesday — and on the same day, the state’s top health official cautioned it was far from over.

Counties around the state reported 10,341 new cases — its fifth-most in a single day — and another 116 deaths from the virus, according to data compiled by this news organization. California’s total case count climbed over 400,000 and inched closer to New York’s record. The five days with the highest case numbers have all come since July 6; Tuesday was the ninth day in that time with more than 100 fatalities.
