Unemployment claims jumped in California to their highest levels in more than two months, a grim trend that has surfaced at the same time state and local government officials have renewed coronavirus-linked shutdowns of businesses after they had been briefly opened.

An estimated 287,700 California workers filed initial claims for unemployment during the week that ended on July 11, which was 22,900 more than the 264,800 who filed initial jobless claims during the week ending on July 4, federal labor officials reported Thursday.
