As San Quentin Prison officials contend with a runaway outbreak of COVID-19 that has infected more than 1,000 inmates, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that some of those sick could be brought a medical center in the Bay Area.

The Marin County prison is host to one of the state’s most alarming — and fast-spreading — outbreaks. In a press briefing, Newsom said his team would consider possible releases for prisoners who are at high risk for contracting the disease or who are close to finishing their sentences as the prison’s caseload ticks up.
