SAN JOSE — On June 5, longtime South Bay peace activist Sharat Lin was at downtown San Jose’s largest peaceful demonstration in recent memory, celebrating and dancing with protesters rallying against the police killing of George Floyd.
Around 9:30 p.m. the crowd was starting to thin. After a week of intense criticism for heavy-handed tactics during the protests’ early days, San Jose police scaled back their presence, capped by the sight of Capt. Jason Dwyer — a chief architect of SJPD’s response — taking a knee with a protester.
