SAN JOSE — Derrick Sanderlin has spent the past few years as a community organizer working to build bridges between San Jose police and minority residents historically fearful of their authority, including training officers to limit the effect of implicit and cultural bias on their duties in the field.
On May 29, the first day of demonstrations in San Jose protesting the Memorial Day police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Sanderlin was in that peacekeeper role once more. At one point, he helped a motorist get to safety after his car window was shattered, presumably because it had a “Blue Lives Matter” license-plate frame.
