Planned layoffs in the Bay Area have topped 38,000 so far in May, with high-profile restaurants and hotels among the casualties in the wake of ongoing government restrictions and shutdowns of businesses to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The Olive Garden, California Pizza Kitchen, and some big-name hotels in downtown San Jose and San Francisco were among the major companies that formally notified the state’s labor agency of temporary staffing reductions.
