As Gov. Gavin Newsom announced plans Monday to loosen shelter-in-place restrictions and slowly reopen parts of California’s economy, the number of COVID-19 cases continued to grow in the state, reaching 56,100 statewide and 8,901 in the Bay Area.

There also were 70 new coronavirus-related deaths reported in California on Monday, bringing the total number of fatalities in the state to 2,282, according to data compiled by this news organization.
