Roughly 3.7 million California workers have filed for unemployment benefits in seven weeks amid the coronavirus outbreak, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday — numbers that point to a shocking milestone: About one of every five workers in the state have lost their jobs.
The jaw-dropping avalanche of unemployment claims arrives at a time when call centers and computer systems at the state’s labor agency have failed to respond to the needs of jobless workers.
