SAN JOSE — After persistent prodding from civil-rights and open-court groups, the Santa Clara County Superior Court has established a bank of phone lines to allow the public to listen in to ongoing court hearings for which physical access has been curtailed or virtually eliminated because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Beginning this week, public observers with no direct role in a court case can now remotely observe proceedings through a listen-only phone line associated with a particular courtroom.
