Newly filed unemployment claims totaled 661,000 in California last week, a brutally high number that shows how the economic fallout from the coronavirus continues to bludgeon the state’s feeble economy, federal officials reported Thursday.

Even worse: Several Bay Area workers said Thursday and this week they are still having trouble getting through the torrent of phone calls to the beleaguered state Employment Development Department phone banks, or are being told they don’t qualify for state unemployment benefits despite making only a modest annual wage.
