The coronavirus pivot has become the only way many businesses can keep the lights on during this pandemic: Dance studios are holding online classes, bars are selling cocktails to go and maintenance companies are offering over-the-phone, do-it-yourself guided repairs.

For most, it’s a band-aid, they say, not a solution when shelter in place orders give them little choice. But Balsam Hill, a Redwood City company that sells artificial Christmas trees, seasonal wreaths and flower arrangements directly to consumers, has found a new niche during its slower sales season: mobilizing to sell bulk food to consumers from distributors who normally serve restaurants. By using their existing shipping infrastructure, they say, they’re taking the pressure off grocery stores and helping people who can’t go shopping.
