With a large number of new deaths reported Wednesday, San Mateo became the county in the Bay Area with the highest per-capita rate of fatalities from COVID-19, while another outbreak took hold at a San Francisco housing project.
Deaths in San Mateo County swelled by 40% in new data reported Wednesday as health officials added 11 to the county’s death toll, which grew to 39. Only Santa Clara (94) and Alameda (43) counties have had more people perish from the virus, but San Mateo’s rate of five deaths per 100,000 residents is the highest in the Bay Area.
