HAYWARD — Six patients at a Hayward nursing home have died of COVID-19, the Alameda County Health Department announced Wednesday afternoon and the total number of cases there jumped to 59.

The numbers show a sharp increase from just yesterday, when the director of the facility, Gateway Care and Rehabilitation Center said there were about 40 cases and that one person had died. The county reported Wednesday that the cases broke down as 35 residents six who have died — and 24 staff members.
