OAKLAND — A prominent civil rights attorney hired by the family of a man who died at a Hayward nursing home from COVID-19 along with eight other people is calling for a criminal investigation into the facility’s handling of the pandemic.
Attorney John Burris and Adanté D. Pointer, a lawyer in his law firm, said they will investigate the situation at Gateway Care and Rehabilitation Center in Hayward, where Costell Akrie, 87, died from the disease. It was revealed last week that at least 66 people inside that facility have been infected with the virus — the biggest outbreak among nursing homes in the Bay Area.
