“I’m a lucky guy.” That was my father’s favorite saying, especially during his final years when he was not a very lucky guy, sick and bedridden in a nursing home. He was the last of his generation; my mom and all his brothers and sisters and best friends had passed on. He never complained, felt sorry for himself or lost his temper – even with his caretakers. No doubt he was sad, lonely, frustrated, in pain and yet his message to us was always “I’m a lucky guy” — words I will never forget.
