DALY CITY — The Seton Medical Center — the city’s largest employer — has temporarily staved off closure as the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to pump $20 million into the struggling hospital system in an effort to save hundreds of jobs and avoid creating a health desert amid the coronavirus outbreak.
In a 4-1 vote — Supervisor Dave Pine voting against — supervisors voted to give $5 million a year over four years to the entity that eventually buys the medical center from current owner Verity Health, which filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and in January announced the planned closure of a Los Angeles-based hospital in its chain.
