Amid growing concerns over the potential economic fallout of the coronavirus outbreak on Silicon Valley businesses and residents, San Jose city leaders are placing a temporary moratorium on the evictions of tenants facing significant financial burdens due to the global pandemic.

The moratorium, approved the San Jose City Council Tuesday night, will be in effect for at least 30 days and protect residents who can document that they cannot pay rent due to a substantial loss of income related to the virus. The city will evaluate extending the eviction moratorium in a month after it goes into effect.
