A couple on board the coronavirus-stricken Grand Princess cruise ship now docked at the Port of Oakland is suing the ship’s operator, claiming the company lacked proper health screening to protect them from the virus.

The federal lawsuit, filed Monday, alleges the Grand Princess company knew one of its passengers who disembarked on Feb. 21 had symptoms of COVID-19. The passenger, a man from Placer County, got off the cruise ship in San Francisco when it returned from Mexico and later died, becoming California’s first death linked to the virus.
