As seven counties around the Bay Area went into a virtual societal lockdown for the next three weeks due to the coronavirus crisis, there was one major local employer where some workers were staying on the job: Tesla.

Tesla is keeping the lights on at its factory in Fremont, and Chief Executive Elon Musk has told employees that he is going to continue coming to work every day even though Alameda, Santa Clara and other local counties have issued a shelter at home edict telling all residents to remain at home for the next three weeks, except for reasons such as buying food, going to the doctor or  engaging in what is called “essential work”.
