Investors drove stocks into the red Thursday as fears about the spread of coronavirus grew after Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in California following the state’s first death from the disease.
As trading progressed, the blue chip Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled by 1,000 points, or 3.7%, to 26,085.34, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was down by 283 points, or 3%, at 8,741.33. The bellwether S&P 500 Index shed 111 points, or 3.5%, to fall to 3,019.12. The markets retreat erased nearly all the prior day’s gains that were fueled by reaction to economic stimulus plans from central banks and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s slate of wins in the Super Tuesday primaries.
