Now that the winter season is approaching and there are less hours of daylight each day, people may begin to experience a type of depression called seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD. Symptoms typically start when the days get shorter in the fall and winter and subside in the spring, when there are longer daylight hours. This happens each winter season and is known as the “winter blues.”
This year especially, the “winter blues,” combined with the anxieties and loneliness that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused, are making depression rates higher than ever, especially in the older adult population. Since so many of the safety precautions surrounding COVID-19 are directed at isolation of older adults.
