Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said may trigger public safety power shutoffs Wednesday evening that could affect more than 54,000 customers in California, including thousands in wind-prone hills across the Bay Area.

The goal is to reduce the risk that energized power equipment would fail and spark new wildfires during a period with hot, dry and windy conditions.
