Even as scientists celebrate global success in healing the ozone layer, research has found that problems appear to be developing over the Great Plains.
If the Great Plains are at particular risk of a thinning of the ozone layer, then its people, animals and plants are at greater risk of adverse health effects from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, according to a report published last year in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. For humans, that would mean greater risk of such things as skin cancer, cataracts and impaired immune systems.
