The Perseid meteor shower will peak in the predawn hours of August 12/13. If you have a safe dark site, and don't have to go to work early on Monday, and IF the sky is clear, you may see as many as 50 meteors an hour. There is no official meteor watching event scheduled as far as I know, but that doesn't mean you can't have your own back yard event.
This past Sunday was the sixth anniversary of the Curiosity Rover, aka Mars Science Laboratory's wildly successful landing on Mars via the novel sky-crane system. If you are curious yourself, view the Seven Minutes of Terror NASA video and see the computerized landing and learn a bit of the background of the system. If you are intrigued by what you see, you may want to read the book The Right Kind of Crazy by the team leader, Adam Steltzner.
