New Mexicans are beginning to hear a lot of claims about Holtec’s proposed interim spent nuclear fuel storage site between Hobbs and Carlsbad (“Fatal flaws in plan for fuel rods in N.M.,” July 1). Key to this and other federal permitting decisions are legal, scientific and engineering facts, along with broad feedback from the public. That’s how we designed our environmental protection and nuclear management rules to work.

As a senior environmental leader in the Obama Administration, I saw firsthand how informed public opinion helps our government make better decisions.
